Mongolian University of Life Sciences has 5 leading research institutes and 6 branch schools. One of these institutes, the Institute of Plant and Agricultural Sciences in Darkhan-Uul province, is an independent research and higher education organization which has been operating since 1948 in the central agricultural zone of Mongolia.
Currently, we are operating under a new structure consisting of three connected divisions, namely, The School of Agroecology and Business, The Research Center and The Production and Innovation Center and there have been considerable improvements in the integration of research, education and production activities.
Today, our institute has total of 235 employees including 63 researchers, assistant researchers and 86 instructors. Out of all instructors and researchers, 23 percent has postgraduate academic degrees: Professors - 2, Associate Professor - 8, Sc. D (Doctor of Science) - 1, Ph. D (Doctor of Philosophy) - 31, Doctorate - 49 and Master’s - 56.
THE RESEARCH CENTER
The Research Center has 7 sections: agricultural research, selection research, seed research, potato research, vegetable research, fruit research and plant genetic resources. And 5 laboratories: plant biochemistry, plant biotechnology, soil microbiology, soil agrochemistry and molecule genetics.
The basic research orientation of the center focuses on the soil conservation and fertility recovery, the development of new superior varieties with high yield and superior quality and their seed production and the development appropriate crop cultivation practices, in addition the safe conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources and the effective application of biotechnology for crop improvement programs.
THE PRODUCTION AND INNOVATION CENTER
The Production and Innovation Center comprises of start-up companies for wheat seeds, potatoes and vegetable production and an animal husbandry farm. All these units conduct experiments and trainings, and practice production on the field of 1341 hectares. The Center also provides Agrobusiness consulting service.
THE SCHOOL OF AGROECOLOGY AND BUSINESS
Our school has trained 6574 specialists in about 20 professional fields since 1969. And over 500 students have finished our advanced natural science training lycee school successfully for further advancement. Currently, we are providing mostly bachelor’s and master’s degree courses in full-time, part-time, external and correspondence forms for about 1700 undergraduate and 100 graduate students in 21 majoring fields. Besides, driving practice and mechanization trainings are also offered.
The school is implementing projects on environmental impact assessment, environmental monitoring analysis, forest management, water basin survey, recycling waste materials etc. For the purpose of improving social responsibilities, various NGOs and centers at the professional departments have been carrying out contract and other projects. Some of those extension centers are: Remote sensing and geographical information database center, household training business study, environmental study, hydrological, and fruit and vegetable reprocessing centers, and “Diamond” foreign language center.
